Philippines Shoutout

Philippines Shoutout
BY: TARTLE

Shout out to the Philippines

TARTLE may be a young company but it already stretches around the world with users in many countries. One of the many countries you can find us in is the Philippines. So it’s time we gave a little shout out to the amazing people of that small nation and their culture.

If you aren’t familiar with this little country, it’s a collection of islands in the Pacific, far off the eastern coast of Asia. It was ravaged by WWII and is covered in jungle with a volcano or two thrown in just to make things exciting.

The culture there is an interesting one. On one hand, there are tent and shanty cities built right next to railroad tracks. On the other, everyone there has a smartphone and is constantly sending texts or scrolling Facebook. It’s a deeply religious and developing culture with one foot in the past and the other in the future. As such, it’s kept many of its older qualities like a strong and cheerful work ethic and generosity while showing a significant aptitude for learning new technologies to keep them connected across the islands and with friends and family who move to the USA.

One of those people who made the journey across the deep blue sea is married to one of the people who work for us here at TARTLE. Alex (our co-founder for those just tuning in) went over there for dinner and was talking with everyone when he realized the wife was missing. Well, it turns out she was in the kitchen working on dinner, even after working all day. When it was time to eat, a veritable feast was laid out with mountains upon mountains of food. And yes, this is normal for them. It’s one of the admirable things about Filipino culture, the work never stops. Men and women are both constantly in motion, accomplishing something that needs to be done, yet few ever complain about it. That’s because they do it all out of a sense of service, a desire to care for others that leads them to really put themselves into their work.

It’s exactly these kinds of people that TARTLE is striving to bring into the fold. Anyone who puts that kind of spirit and effort into just normal, daily life deserves to be rewarded for it. That’s true of their data use as well. When they are spending time on their phones, checking out the news, shopping or keeping up with people via Facebook, they are just generating profit for that company. The people of the Philippines deserve a little something back for that. After all, when you’re working on getting out of the tent by the railroad tracks and into something a little nicer, every little bit counts. By working through us, they have the chance to take that data they are generating and turn into a good subsidy for their lives and use it however they want. Though if Alex’s recent dinner is any indication, it just might go into helping make another mountain of food, which is no bad thing either.

TARTLE welcomes everyone, wherever you are from to sign up with us. We want to help you, whether you are driving a cab in Moscow, roaming the desert in Libya, working in a cubicle in Des Moines, Iowa, or running a fishing boat in the Philippines to take control of your data. Whether you just want to be able to generate some extra income by selling your data or share your data to specifically help causes you care about, TARTLE is there to make it all possible.

TRANSCRIPT

Speaker 1 (00:07):

Welcome to TARTLE Cast with your hosts, Alexander McCaig and Jason Rigby. Where humanity steps into the future, and source data defines the path.

Alexander McCaig (00:24):

Coconuts.

Jason Rigby (00:25):

Yes.

Alexander McCaig (00:25):

Long Christmas holidays. Islands galore.

Jason Rigby (00:30):

Colorful Jeeps.

Alexander McCaig (00:31):

Colorful Jeeps, and many, many...

Jason Rigby (00:34):

Pearls.

Alexander McCaig (00:35):

Yeah. Many pearls. Volcanic explosions, huge feasts every day.

Jason Rigby (00:41):

Every day, singing and having fun. Drinking alcohol.

Alexander McCaig (00:45):

What could be such an Elysian paradise?

Jason Rigby (00:47):

Hanging out in the mall.

Alexander McCaig (00:48):

Going to the malls, that's exactly right.

Jason Rigby (00:50):

Playing basketball.

Alexander McCaig (00:51):

Sending way too many text messages. Where could this place possibly be? You guessed it. It's the Philippines.

Jason Rigby (00:57):

The Philippines, people.

Alexander McCaig (00:59):

You got to love the Philippines.

Jason Rigby (01:00):

Yes. You got love the Philippines and the people of the Philippines. We just said a bunch of fun stuff and we're all like laughing and smiling and it just seems like that seems to be the whole, I bet they're sarcastic too. That would be fun.

Alexander McCaig (01:14):

Oh, that'd be great. Oh, and they're also so like ridiculously polite, like almost over polite.

Jason Rigby (01:19):

Yeah. That's that's so awesome.

Alexander McCaig (01:20):

Where it's like, can you just dish me a little rude?

Jason Rigby (01:24):

They probably are secretly thinking it inside. And so thus the over nice, but I bet like close friends. They're just ragging on each other all the time.

Alexander McCaig (01:31):

They're like, we're going to legitimately kill them.

Jason Rigby (01:33):

Yes.

Alexander McCaig (01:35):

If the volcano doesn't get them, we will.

Jason Rigby (01:38):

We will. Yeah, exactly.

Alexander McCaig (01:39):

No.

Jason Rigby (01:39):

They have a huge river too.

Alexander McCaig (01:40):

Oh yeah, they have the longest subterranean river, so an underground river, anywhere in the world.

Jason Rigby (01:46):

That's crazy. Yeah.

Alexander McCaig (01:48):

And so there's a lot of cool things about the Philippines and we just want to do a cultural shout out on this episode. You know, TARTLE is about human beings.

Jason Rigby (01:55):

Right.

Alexander McCaig (01:56):

So when we look at our users, and we have a bunch of users in the Philippines, you got to respect the place and the people for what it is.

Jason Rigby (02:05):

Yes.

Alexander McCaig (02:06):

And we think it's really interesting to talk about the Philippines because it's akin to the people that are there. And we want to show that we appreciate the culture, just as much as they appreciate using the system that we've created for them.

Jason Rigby (02:17):

Yeah. And if somebody is in the Philippines and they're looking at like trying to understand TARTLE, we've done some studies and different things like that. I know privacy is a concern. But being able to come on to TARTLE and sign up, and get paid for the data that you're using, whether it's Facebook or whatever it may be.

Alexander McCaig (02:37):

We know all of our Filipino friends, all of you are on Facebook.

Jason Rigby (02:40):

Yes.

Alexander McCaig (02:41):

Every single one of you. And you're just creating all this profit for one company and you're not sharing in it. Everybody wants a little bit of an economic gain and you're giving it all away.

Jason Rigby (02:54):

Yes.

Alexander McCaig (02:55):

You know, jeez, Philippines, you're spending all that money on Christmas gifts, well something's got to subsidize it, subsidize it with your data. The Philippines is really trying to grow like you and I both know, aside from Manila, you said Cebu is the new tech place?

Jason Rigby (03:09):

Yeah. There's like a big IT Park there.

Alexander McCaig (03:13):

The economy is truly trying to expand and there's a great wealth of resources there. So it's fantastic to see that they're taking the steps in the right direction, that not only matches with their culture, but to elevate themselves. They want to be a part of the world. Everybody wants to feel developed.

Jason Rigby (03:29):

Yes.

Alexander McCaig (03:30):

And with the Philippines, there's a lot of flavor down there and things are starting to mix and there's a lot of Western ideologies that have crept over. But the culture itself is really, really neat. And I think one of the coolest things are those Jeepers, what are they called?

Jason Rigby (03:44):

Yeah. Yeah. So it's basically like a bus, but dude, the colors on those, and the creativity.

Alexander McCaig (03:50):

And they'd use fabrication of multiple different, large vessels and like put them on this thing. But it's a majority of the public transportation that people use.

Jason Rigby (03:59):

After we go into there, we got to get a TARTLE one of those.

Alexander McCaig (04:02):

Yeah, we got to dress them up. We'll ship you guys over a TARTLE one, or you paint it up for us.

Jason Rigby (04:07):

Yeah, we would love that. Yeah. If there's an owner of one of those Jeeps, yeah, get in touch with us.

Alexander McCaig (04:12):

Yeah, please in touch with us. One of our employees at TARTLE, their spouse is Filipino. And so I had gone over to the house and I mean, it's just like three or four people. And I'm like, "Well, where did, so-and-so go?" "Oh, they're cooking." I'm like, "Are you kidding me? They've been working all day." They're like, "Yeah. It's just a cultural thing. You work all day. And then you come back and you just continue to cook and keep working. It doesn't stop."

Jason Rigby (04:45):

That's awesome.

Alexander McCaig (04:46):

So she comes back out and there is just this mountain of food. I'm like, "Oh my goodness." It feels like every day is as a feast here for us. And it's funny to watch like that culture come around, it's like, they're so welcoming. It's so warm. They want to feed you, like really sharing the happiness, keep you entertained, karaoke, whatever the thing might be.

Jason Rigby (05:09):

Just fun.

Alexander McCaig (05:10):

It's all there. Right. And so it's great too, from like a personal standpoint to connect with that culture.

Jason Rigby (05:17):

Yeah. And we would love to have you guys sign up on TARTLE.co.

Alexander McCaig (05:21):

Yeah.

Jason Rigby (05:22):

You can go there. You can, like we said, legit, get paid for your data and you can use PayPal, because I know that's popular.

Alexander McCaig (05:30):

You guys like PayPal over there, which is great. That's a new addition that we've brought on for flexibility in the system.

Alexander McCaig (05:36):

Or if you want to live in crypto, you can choose to do so.

Jason Rigby (05:38):

Yeah, cryptocurrency.

Alexander McCaig (05:39):

And everybody's on their cell phone all day, you guys send a lot of text messages, my Filipino friends. So, if you're going to be on the phone, make sure the phone is paying you back.

Jason Rigby (05:50):

Yes, exactly.

Alexander McCaig (05:51):

And on top of that, the Philippines is really trying to develop. If there are causes you care about in the Philippines, you can share your data towards those specific causes. I think that's pretty fantastic.

Jason Rigby (06:02):

Yeah, that's awesome.

Alexander McCaig (06:03):

So when you have the collective power of 110 million people, having their focus on one specific thing, think about how much change can happen so quickly, how the Philippines as a country can effectuate that change so that they can improve their quality of life.

Alexander McCaig (06:19):

I think that's amazing.

Jason Rigby (06:20):

Yeah. That's amazing. And like I said, make sure you guys go to TARTLE.Co, T-A-R-T-L-E.Co.

Alexander McCaig (06:27):

Yep, and get started.

Jason Rigby (06:28):

And sign up and get started. And we would love to, if you are a business leader in the community and you'd like to purchase data, you can also do that. If you own a business and you want to purchase data, we'd be more than happy to have that conversation with you.

Alexander McCaig (06:40):

Yeah. Thank you very much, guys.

Speaker 1 (06:50):

Thank you for listening to TARTLE Cast with your hosts, Alexander McCaig and Jason Rigby. Where humanity steps into the future and source data finds the path. What's your data worth?
